The Damsel in Distress.. tie me up baby!

Oh .. did I have a fun morning talking to the author of this great group of pulp fiction comics. Karen Silversmith is the author of several very cute comic books. The books are in THiNC format and can be rezzed inworld or alternatively on screen for your reading pleasure.

Below is a transcript of the conversation we had, with Karen explaining to me just how much effort goes into making these comics.

Suede: How often do you publish?
Karen : I try to do at least one book a week, but of course things don't always work as planned. The Adventures of Rennisa Melody took two months from the time I took the pics to actual publication

Suede: So I see 3 at the moment, Abbi, Cliffhangers and Damsel Files.. is that correct?
Karen: Well Abby has become Latex Kittens now featuring different models and I also have TAORM, and a new superheroine title called SuperStarr.

Suede : Do you charge for your publications and how are they circulated?
Karen : Yes, anywhere from 50l to 125L per issue, it mainly depends how many pages are involved in the issue have several vendors around SL, places like Kidnapped!, Dead End City, Little Shop Of Kink, Webound Mall, Anarchy Island, Hoar's Harbor
there even a club that has my sampler placed about with a link to one of my stores.

Suede : Okay.. so let me ask you.. The Latex Kitten ...looks more sexual in nature.. is it?
Karen : Well I wanted to do a more Fetish based book outside of the Damsell In Distress genre. Something more on the photography side than the story side, thus Abby was born.

Suede: Do you think more women or men.. favour your comics?
Karen: So far I have seen an even mix, women tend to like it because in most of my stories the women are there own hero. They find a way to free themselves instead of relying on a male character to set them free. I do have a couple where there is a hero, but only when it's story appropriate. Men enjoy them because they already have an interest in the suspense of what will happen to the damsel, which is the main focus of The Damsel Files

Suede: So how do you choose your models, is there a particular look you like, innocent, girlish ?
Karen: Not really, I see the model, and get the idea for a character or a storyline. The Adventures Of Rennisa Melody was originally being shot for an issue of TDF, then while shooting I realized the overall Nancy Drew aspect it had, and realized it could be a series on it's own. In future issues there will be recurring characters, a best friend, the town sheriff, a chemistry professor.

Suede: How much time and money do you think your publications cost you, are you breaking evenor it's all about the love of the job
Karen: Well it is all about the love of the job, ever since I was little, I have always been making up stories in my head. Doing this provides a great outlet for me to express my imagination. I have alot of fun doing these. Do I wish it would make me rich, of course, who doesn't want to be rich. But for now, I just enjoy doing this. I have made alot of friends along the way, and met alot of interesting people and I hope it continues as long as people keep reading them, I will keep making them no matter what the cost.

Suede: Do you use Windlight settings for your photographs or do you touch them up in Photoshop?
Karen: I do all my editing in PS, I recently met a photographer who gave me ideas on how to adjust lighting to give the pics a more three dimensional look, if you compare issue 1 to issue 7 of TDF you can see a big difference.

My last question to Karen was this, was she interested in producing machinima versions of her Damsel Files or her other publications and she said she was more than interested, so anyone out there with a interest, maybe you should contact her, you might be SL's answer to Quentin Tarantino. If your also interested I have noted below Karen Silversmith's Facebook page and also her MySpace space, have fun reading the comics she produces, I know I did.
